British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
