Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
